A bout Us
Clackamas Women's Services Guiding Principles Incorporated in 1985 as Clackamas County's only shelter for women & children escaping family violence, CWS has safely harbored over 7,000 women & children within the walls of our two shelters. Each night thirty-two women & children call these shelters "home" as they regain control of their lives and plan for their futures. In addition to emergency shelter, CWS has responded to over 70,000 crisis calls in the last 16 years. This hotline is staffed by trained volunteers & CWS personnel who provide support, information on restraining orders, other resources, and just listen when someone needs to talk. Because of the negative impact of family violence on youth, CWS has developed a program specifically for children. Through CWS' Children's Program, mothers receive parenting support and information. Children benefit from play therapy, groups, and education and prevention classes, as well as individual attention so that they can break the cycle of violence in their adult lives. Clackamas Women's Services offers women & children more than a safe place to sleep. CWS provides broken families with long-term emotional and financial support, and transitional housing to ensure their successful journey from crisis to stability. Beyond the critical services CWS offers women & children escaping abuse, CWS' objective is to reduce the incidence of family violence through public education. We offer community education workshops to a variety of churches, businesses and schools in Clackamas County. To insure that CWS services reflect sensitivity to the needs of all families, we seek to involve individuals from diverse backgrounds & experiences on our staff, among our volunteers and on our Board of Directors. Mission Statement Clackamas Women’s Services fosters self-empowerment of women and children so they can establish lives free from domestic and sexual violence. Vision Statement Clackamas Women’s Services fosters self-empowerment of survivors of domestic and sexual violence to move toward lives free of abuse through the provision of crisis and referral services, emergency shelter, transitional services, and community and business education and outreach, thereby reducing the generational recurrence of domestic and sexual violence in our community. Guiding Values Clackamas Women’s Services affirms these values as fundamental to completing our daily work and fulfilling our mission. We live these values in daily in our relationships with board members, co-workers, program participants, our community partners and the community at large that we serve. These values are the yardstick upon which the integrity of our agency can be measured. Clear and Open Communication Every one of our board members, co-workers, program participants community partners and funders are responsible for and have the right to honest, well-intentioned, direct feedback that addresses key issues for the agency. All of our communication is transparent in its meaning and its purpose. Individuals deserve to be heard and valued and are the best advocates for their own points of view. Support We serve as advocates for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We work, collaborate, communicate and provide services in a safe and non-judgmental environment. We foster self-empowerment of program participants and staff while respecting their choices and opinions. Sustainability We work to maintain human and financial resources to ensure we can continue to provide services. We practice and advocate for safety and self-care for ourselves and our participants. We are fiscally responsible, making intentional decisions based on well-developed plans. Self-determination We believe that every human being has the right to choose their own path and we respect the choices that are made in that regard. Social Change It is our responsibility to educate our communities, society as a whole and each other about domestic and sexual violence and oppressions that contribute to this violence. We are committed to batterer accountability. We believe that the only through a coordinated community response and the involvement of all persons can domestic and sexual violence be eliminated. We hold ourselves accountable for our own actions as well as for the choices we make with our programs. We hold our own system as well as the systems we work with and within accountable to the needs of survivors. Respect Respect is the cornerstone of our practices. We respect individual choices and honor diversity. We strive for survivor-centered best practices and cultural competency in our work. Clackamas Women’s Services affirms the right of every person to live a life free of violence. We honor differences among women & children and make our services accessible to individuals who face discrimination for any reason. We provide safety, shelter, information and advocacy to increase women & children’s access to medical, legal and social services. We work toward the empowerment of all women & children to control their own lives, and encourage the individuals who use our services to make their own life choices. We recognize that violence against women & children is a widespread and deep-seated societal problem. We actively advocate social change and educate the community about the impact of domestic & sexual violence. We support a coordinated community response to family violence, which holds abusers accountable. Since 1985, Clackamas Women's Services has been the only non-profit organization in Clackamas County dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence against women and children. During this time we've touched the lives of more than 70,000 women, children and community members through our four programs: If you or someone you know has experienced domestic violence or sexual assault, please call our crisis line at 503.654.2288 for help.
