Happy
Spring!
Hello Volunteers,
I hope everyone is having a great Spring Equinox
today! Things have been busy in the volunteer
program, as we just finished another round of volunteer
training at the beginning of March. I want to
extend my heartfelt thanks to all the trainers,
participants and everyone else that made this volunteer
training a huge success. We are very excited to
have these new volunteers and appreciate their
commitment in completing the training and beginning to
volunteer. As always, if you know someone
who may be interested in taking the volunteer training
or if you yourself are interested in attending, be in
touch with me via email (emilys@cwsor.org) or telephone
(503.654.2807 ext. 305).
We have a number of
upcoming events in the next few months, some of which we
would love you to attend and some of which we are in
need of some volunteer help! In addition, we are
currently looking for an intern in our development
program. Please read more about these great
opportunities below.
Remember to take time for
yourself to do the things you
love!
Peace,
Emily Sturm

Volunteer Appreciation
Week!
April 28th through May 2 is
Volunteer Appreciation Week. Not that we need a
special week to thank our volunteers (we appreciate you
every week of the year!), but I wanted to send a special
message out thanking each and every one of you for your
volunteer commitment. In just the first two months
of 2008, volunteers have already logged a total of over
850 hours! That is an incredible testament
to the importance of volunteers and the valuable work
they do here at CWS.
Every step each one of us
takes to raise awareness about domestic and sexual
violence is a step closer to ending it. We
appreciate the passion, commitment, enthusiasm, and
kindness you share while volunteering at
CWS.

Volunteer
Spotlight: Shelley Paxton

A few
years ago, after being a loyal office volunteer for many
years, Judy Paxton - along with her daughter Shelley Paxton -
began supplying Clackamas Women's Services with bi-weekly food
donation deliveries. These food pick-ups and drop-offs
have evolved into a weekly event that generously supplies
perishable food items for both of our shelters. Says
Shelley of her mother Judy, "mom always believed in giving
back and helping others." Although Judy Paxton passed
away last April, Shelley continues to loyally bring the weekly
food delivery. On average, a food drop-off consists of 6
gallons of milk, 6 dozen eggs, cheese, butter, bouillon, some
vegetables and occasional special treats like cupcakes.
Even though Shelley recalls it was difficult for her to
continue doing the food deliveries after her mother's passing,
she says she continued because "it kept my heart whole."
Shelley says she volunteers her time and money to donate food
to the participants at CWS because "children should not have
to wonder if there is milk in the fridge when [they] wake up
in the morning." She acknowledges the positive impact
her weekly food donation has in being one of the many
pieces that create a supportive environment at CWS for women
who are leaving abusive situations. Shelley's advice to
potential volunteers: "find something that warms your heart
and feeds your soul." Thank you for all of the effort
and time you have put forth and continue to put forth while
volunteering for us over the years, Shelley. Thank you
also to Judy for all the years she dedicated to volunteering
in her community. Judy and Shelley's commitment to this
movement is truly inspiring for all of
us.
