Sponsored by The Urban League of Portland, Organizing People, Activating Leaders (OPAL) and Multnomah County Health Equity Initiative, the Social Justice and Civic Leadership Training is a three-session training and networking opportunity aimed at African Americans and others who are community activists or leaders, recently inspired by local or national elections and want to take it to the next level, concerned about an issue or problem in their community or who want to be an effective advocate for policy change. The sessions are free of charge.

¨ Understanding Social Movements –July 26

A history of social movements such as the civil rights movement, and the keys to successful social change then and now.

¨ Tackling inequity through Policy change – August 23

Exploring power analysis dynamics: why inequities exist and who benefits? How political and economic systems work and how we have the most impact.

¨ Building a Community Campaign—October 11

Developing the strategies and skills for change, including lobbying legislators/elected officials.

PARTICIPATE IN A STUDY OF SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and the Boston VA are conducting a research study for women who have recently been sexually assaulted.

If you are a woman over the age of 18 who has been sexually assaulted in the past 4 weeks you may be eligible to participate. Reimbursement is provided for study involvement.
The study consists of 4 online (internet) confidential surveys completed over the course of 4 months. You will not be asked to provide your name on the website.
Examples of the online questions include asking about your mental health since the assault, ways that you have been coping, and how much support you have been receiving.  You will not have to answer any questions you do not wish to.

ARMS

ARMS (Abuse Recovery Ministry and Services) is starting two new domestic violence support groups. One is in Canby every Monday from 7 – 8:30 and offers child care, the other one is in Gresham on Tuesday from 7-8:30. Second Saturday- What Women Need to Know about Divorce

Explore the legal, financial, psychological, and social issues of divorce and discover community resources available to help. Talk to other women experiencing similar life changes, and receive professional advice from experts. The class is at PCC on the second Saturday of each month from 8:30-1. There is a $45 fee to cover materials and snacks, but this can be waived if approved in advance.

Free Mammograms

Women without health insurance can now get free mammograms in the east Portland area. Adventist Medical Center received a $50,000 grant from the National Breast Cancer Foundation and they have decided to use the money for free exams. An Adventist spokesperson says it's an answer for a growing population without adequate health coverage. Women 40 years and older who do not have health insurance and have not had a mammogram in more than one year should call Adventist at (503) 251-6245.
