ABOUT THE ISSUE

Unfortunately, domestic and sexual violence touches far too many lives, at least 2.3 million people in the United States every year experience abuse from an intimate partner, dating partner or spouse.  Clackamas Women’s Services aims to serve those who have been touched by Domestic Violence in their family, be it from a partner, parent or other family member, as well as those whose lives have been impacted by Intimate Partner Violence and harmed by someone they are dating, in a relationship with, etc.  At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men’s lives are directly impacted by Sexual Violence, which can be perpetrated by strangers or, as is much more common, an acquaintance, friend, partner, or family member of the survivor.  For many survivors, Stalking was also a tactic used against them, for others it stands alone. 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men have been stalked in their lifetime.  Our agency is available 24/7 to help survivors’ safety plan and face the challenge of keeping themselves and their loved ones as safe as possible.  It is important to remember that domestic and sexual violence can effect anyone regardless of economic status, ethnic or racial background, or age.  An alarming number of teens (as well as adults) experience Dating Violence in relationships and Elder Abuse from spouses, children, caregivers and other trusted persons is also very common.

While the statistics and prevalence of all forms of domestic and sexual violence are deeply alarming, what we know is that education, support, and services can make a world of difference for our community and for survivors themselves as well as their family and friends.  At CWS, we seek to understand the many aspects of domestic and sexual violence, how it impacts specific communities and us all, and we strive to offer services to all survivors in moving toward lives free of violence.
